How Life Insurance Policy Maturity is Calculated in Nepal

In Nepal, traditional endowment (सावधिक) and money-back (अग्रिम भुक्तानी) life insurance policies participate in the company’s annual actuarial surplus. The maturity payout comprises three statutory components:

1. Basic Sum Assured (मूल बीमाङ्क)
The contractual guaranteed face value chosen at policy commencement, payable upon maturity or premature death.

2. Compounded Reversionary Bonus (कुल बोनस)
Accrued annually per thousand sum assured: (Sum Assured ÷ 1,000) × Bonus Rate × Tenure.

3. Section 88 5% TDS (कर कट्टी)
Inland Revenue Department charges 5% final withholding tax only on the net profit (Gross Payout minus Total Premiums Paid).

Net Maturity Payout = [Sum Assured + (Sum Assured / 1000 × Bonus Rate × Years)] – 5% × [Gross Maturity – Total Premiums Paid]

Frequently Asked Questions: Policy Maturity & TDS in Nepal

Q: How does the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) calculate 5% TDS on maturity?
Under Section 88 of the Nepal Income Tax Act, 5% TDS is withheld ONLY on the capital gains (Gross Maturity Proceeds minus Total Premiums Paid). Your original principal investment is never taxed.

Q: Are bonus rates guaranteed throughout the policy tenure?
No. Reversionary bonuses are declared annually based on statutory actuarial valuations approved by the Nepal Insurance Authority. Once declared for a given year, however, that bonus is vested and cannot be withdrawn.

Q: What documents are required to claim maturity proceeds in Nepal?
You must submit: 1) Original Policy Bond, 2) Discharge Voucher (दस्तावेज फारम), 3) Copy of Citizenship (नागरिकता), 4) Bank Cheque copy / Account Details for ConnectIPS wire transfer.
